Her fans up til now have known her as a singer-songwriter, but when Dear Evan Hansen hits movie theatres in September, we will get to see a whole new side of Liz Kate. Making her feature film debut as a new character named Gemma, Liz tells host Sally Fuller that the emotions were so real during the process that she and her castmates cried even in callbacks for the film. Join us as Liz takes us back through how she landed the role, what she learned from working with Ben Platt, and so much more!
Who is Liz Kate? (in her website’s own words)
Liz Kate began singing and playing guitar at the young age of five and booked her first acting role by age six. Liz Kate realized her passion for the arts and continued with training under various studios and instructors leading her to develop a wide creative range. As the need for further self expression developed, she pursued Songwriting with her now coach of 13 years, Vanessa Olivarez. Nurturing relationships through her mentors and other professionals, she was fortunate to gain guidance from Tony and Oscar Award winning actress and relative, Patricia Neal. Liz Kate trained privately on her music with Jan Smith Studios and continued training in acting with former coach now President of SAG-AFTRA Atlanta Local, Clayton Landey and Catapult Studios in Atlanta among others.
Leaning into her music along the way, she established connections in Nashville, and continued to play out her original songs throughout the Atlanta Metro area and Southeast. Invited to play for showcases and writer’s rounds at popular venues such as Eddie’s Attic, Grocery on Home, Steve’s Live Music, Red Clay Music Foundry, and more, Liz Kate gained experience playing out, filming and writing through her high school years. College visits led her back to Nashville at Belmont University where she was accepted to the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business under the Songwriting Program. Liz Kate’s music style has been described as a Folk, Americana, Jazz feel paired with ethereal vocals.
In 2021, Liz Kate impressed Steven Chbowsky and casting directors at Telsey + Co. with her combined acting and musical talents and went on to book the role of Gemma in the upcoming film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen with Universal Pictures. A dream to combine both acting and music in one role, Liz Kate is excited to share in this important story and thankful to be part of a message that helps others to know they are not alone. Liz Kate is looking forward to telling stories that inspire or change others in a positive light.
